Rites and Symbols

Samkaras – principle phases in the life of a person: birth, coming of age, marriage, and death.

Birth – The baby is taken and the holy word “om” is written with honey on his tongue.

Marriage – Can last up to 12 days, with feast, dancing and religious rituals.

Death – They are cremated in an open urn that is lit by the eldest son of the deceased.

Upanayana – Coming of age ceremony, marks the spiritual rebirth, initiation of studies of scriptures and the learning of the Gayatri and the Rigveda.

Ashrams – Four phases of life:

1.Instruction period, with the study of the Vedas.

2.Home and building a family.

3.More spiritual style of life during retirement.

4.Omission of social life, and concentration on religious search.

Varnas:
Division of society in four great groups called the Varna.

According to Purusa-suhta, one of the hymns of Rig-veda, the four Varnas started during the creation of the world, when a primitive called Purusha was sacrificed. The mouth, arms, legs, and feet of Purusha turned into the four different Varnas.

Brahman: mouth of Purusha; Highest class, priests.

Xatrias: the arms; class of the warriors and rulers.

Vaixias: the legs; class of the merchants and agricultures.
Sudras: the feet; class of the workers.

Sudras: the feet; class of the workers.
